Building products is a great way to automatically build a product from individual items in Lightspeed OnSite. Building products is useful if you receive item parts from vendors and sell them as a fully assembled item, such as a bicycle, or if you want to create a gift basket, or offer a selection of yarns for a pattern for a knitted sweater or scarf.
OnSite removes the individual items from inventory and makes one gift basket available. The component items are no longer available for individual sale unless you unbuild the gift baskets to tell OnSite you’re putting the stock back on the shelves.
Breaking apart products enables you to split a volume or bulk product into multiple individual units of the same kind, such as splitting a case of soda into twelve individual cans. Break Apart inventory can be used only when you need to break a case into identical units. It cannot be used if you need to break a case into mix and match items or multiple styles.
To build a product: creating a gift basket
Before you start, make sure you have all the items you want to add to your gift basket in stock.
1. Set up the product relationships
- In OnSite StoreMaster create a product card to represent the gift basket. You must set the selling price for the gift basket, but do not need to provide supplier or cost data. OnSite handles costing based on the component products.
- Click the Related tab and select the Build tab in the slide-out tray.
- Scan or search for the items you want to be in the gift basket. This establishes which items go into each basket, and in what quantity. In other words, we are telling OnSite that each gift basket will contain a set of items such as 1 jar of jam, 1 box of biscuits, 1 box of truffles, and 1 package of candy.
- Click Save.
2. Build the gift baskets
Do this when you’re ready to package the gift baskets for sale. When you build inventory the finished items are prepared ahead of time rather than at the time of sale.
- In OnSite StoreMaster go to Tools > Build Inventory.
- Search for the gift basket product you created.
- In the Amount to Build field, specify the number of gift baskets to prepare.
- Click Build.
To break apart a product: splitting a case of soda
These steps assume you have cases of soda available in stock.
1. Set up the product relationships
Create a product card to represent a can of soda. If you will be breaking apart several varieties of soda, you need a product to create a product card for each type. Assign a product code and description to identify each can as an individual sale item. You must set the selling price for the can of soda can, but you do not need to provide supplier or cost data. OnSite will handle the costing for you.
- In OnSite StoreMaster open the case product.
- Click the Related tab and select the Break Apart tab in the slide-out tray.
- Scan or search for the individual can product. Specify the quantity of cans in the case, such as 6, 12, or 24.
- Click Save.
2. Split the cases of soda
Do this whenever you need to split a case of soda for individual sale. When you break apart Inventory you will be stocking your refrigerator at the beginning or end of the business day, rather than breaking down cases on an as-needed basis.
- In OnSite StoreMaster go to Tools > Break Apart Inventory.
- Search for a case of soda.
- If you want to break open more than one case of this soda, specify the quantity.
- Click Break Apart.
To break apart a product: unbuilding a gift basket
You can unbuild a gift basket if you want to return items from unsold gift baskets to the shelves. This can sometimes occur after a holiday season or at the end of a promotional period.
- In OnSite StoreMaster go to Tools > Build Inventory.
- Search for the gift basket product you created and built.
- In the Amount to Build field specify a negative number for the gift baskets you will be unbuilding, such as −1.
- Click Build.
